Did your new co-worker get hired by the boss? Does that boss just so happen to be his daddy or mummy?
Nepotism is present in all workplaces and industries, not only in Australia but around the world. Many company policies will prohibit such favouring, but in reality – it is just too hard to police, and the managers who are meant to police it are still just people too, with appeals to emotion and susceptibility to being coerced by their loved ones to unfairly tip the scales in their favour.
This is not a problem if the persons are competent and deserving of the position or privileges they are being given, not so much the case if they have never worked in a similar industry in a position they earnt with their own merit.
It’s not only shameless on behalf of the authority who allows it, but sets their offspring up for failure and contention in the workplace – and rightfully so. There are many people within company’s who had to earn their position, work their way through the ranks to be given such an opportunity, for some arrogant young-adult to be introduced into the same, or worse a better position / pay packet.
There is however the other side of the coin, if a man or woman has worked hard for their entire life to be in a position that allows them to make this mistake – did they too not earn the reward of being able to provide for the ones they care about?
Whilst I personally cannot stand to see people be elevated by their family members (let alone hired to begin with) there must be some sort of compromise for the individual who has dedicated his entire life to a company, raised a family – and now wants his offspring to follow in his footstep.
At what point is it acceptable? Where do you draw the line?
